Caravan Starting, Ignition & Fault Isolation
Explore the named components, make a prediction, then connect the supplied result to the system. This workshop adds coached practice alongside the course handbook and assessed lab.
Caravan starter command, drive and ignition
Trace a starter request through electrical power, motor drive and mechanical transmission. Follow the separate ignition branch, then compare what the starter indication reports with what the supplied power and drive evidence actually establishes.
Control requests, working electrical power, mechanical drive and starter-state reporting are different paths. The one exciter has two individual high-tension outputs.
Recorded state: before the supplied change
Green outlines identify components named in the selected exercise record; they do not indicate a healthy component.
Named connections and what each arrow means
- STARTER and IGNITION switches → Starter switching, motor and speed cutoffInformation / signal: Starter request / MOTOR permission
- DC source and working-power path → Starter switching, motor and speed cutoffElectrical power: Switched working current when the power path is complete
- STARTER and IGNITION switches → One ignition exciterInformation / signal: NORMAL start-associated or independent ON command
- DC source and working-power path → One ignition exciterElectrical power: Exciter primary electrical supply
- Starter switching, motor and speed cutoff → Coupling, splines and gas-generator drivePhysical relationship: Armature torque through coupling and splines
- One ignition exciter → 4 o’clock igniter and its high-tension leadElectrical power: Individual high-tension output / lead
- One ignition exciter → 9 o’clock igniter and its high-tension leadElectrical power: Other high-tension output / lead
- Starter switching, motor and speed cutoff → Starter annunciation and qualified NXi feedbackInformation / signal: Starter-state reporting; qualified contactor feedback
STARTER and IGNITION switches
Request starter operation and ignition through related but distinct selections.
Supplied record: START / NORMAL
How it works with the rest
STARTER has OFF, START and spring-return MOTOR positions. IGNITION NORMAL permits start-associated ignition; IGNITION ON requests continuous ignition independently of the starter-switch position. MOTOR is permitted only with IGNITION NORMAL. A permitted selection is a command condition, not a measurement of working current or rotation.
What the evidence must show
Retain both switch positions. Separate an inhibited MOTOR request from an allowed request that fails to produce a measured response.
Selected: STARTER and IGNITION switches
Follow the change through the system.
Fictional Caravan control trainer, record CV-START-1: STARTER is START and IGNITION is NORMAL. The supplied record establishes complete starter and ignition paths, working starter current, armature drive and applied ignition below the described cutoff. The next snapshot reaches the speed-sensing switch’s described 46% Ng starter cutoff while both switch selections remain unchanged. This is a comparison of supplied states, not an engine acceleration model or an aircraft starting procedure.
Before the recorded change
Before cutoff: START / NORMAL. Starter working current and starter drive are present; ignition is applied. Ng is below the described 46% cutoff.

Course applicability and study references
Formative supplement to TM-043 Rev B, using the supplied Cessna Model 208 D2078 Revision 42 compilation, Chapters 74 and 80. Records are fictional trainer observations, not aircraft starting, motoring or ignition-access procedures. Exact installed starter/generator, aircraft serial number, avionics software and applicable instructions govern real work. No live spark, current, voltage-drop, duty-cycle or engine-start acceptance limit is established here. Existing assessed work and completion requirements remain separate.

D2078 Revision 42 compilation: 80-10-00 p.1 Dec 1/2012; p.101 and Figure 101 sheet 1 p.102 Oct 20/2022. START/OFF/MOTOR, NORMAL interlock, described 46% Ng automatic starter cutoff, separate manual OFF, working-power and mechanical-drive distinctions, and applicable serial-number wiring/installed-unit troubleshooting. Selected Lucas 23081-023 brush-current transfer, holders, springs and pigtails are described in 80-10-01 p.201, Oct 20/2022; that task is not permission to apply its component maintenance to another installed unit. This is not the POH/AFM starting procedure or its cycle limitations.

One 28 VDC exciter, two high-tension leads, two igniters and independent ON versus NORMAL-associated commands. The ignition tasks control stored-energy isolation and component access; actual spark-igniter procedures belong to the applicable engine manual.
- Qualified NXi starter reporting branch
80-00-00 p.101 May 1/2024: event 2538 STARTER ON uses starter ON with engine RUN. Listed effectivity is 20800704, 20800708 and on; 208B2197, 208B5809 and on, with G1000 NXi software configuration v2499.23 and on. KZ004 provides the ground to GEA1 UI005 pin 63PI002. Actual power, feedback and mechanical drive remain independent evidence; event absence outside this branch establishes no acceptance result.
Original learning diagrams and supplied training records explain the stated relationships. Current aircraft-effective instructions and authorization govern actual maintenance.
