G1000 NAV/GPS receivers, antenna coupler and selections

A shared antenna path can affect two navigation receivers while independent GPS paths continue to work. A selected course indication can also remain available when a different receiver’s audio is not selected. Explore these functions, then predict and interpret the supplied records.

01 / Explore the relationships6 selectable components

Functional receiving paths. The matched VHF pair and coupler feed both NAV/glideslope receivers; GPS1 and GPS2 have separate antenna routes. One block represents the two identified GIAs, not one common GPS antenna or a series connection between the receivers.

Green outlines identify components named in the selected exercise record; they do not indicate a healthy component.

Component purpose

Matched VHF blade pair

Receives VHF navigation and glideslope signals for the shared receiving installation.

How it works with the rest

The source describes a left and right blade antenna installed as a matched pair on the vertical stabilizer. The pair participates in both the VHF navigation and glideslope systems. It is not the GPS antenna system. A finding in this shared receiving path can matter to both NAV/glideslope receiver channels, while GPS needs its own observations.

What the evidence must show

Distinguish a shared radio-frequency receiving path from an individual receiver, selected display or separate GPS route.

Selected: Matched VHF blade pair

Exercise brief · supplied training conditions

Fictional functional record: both GIAs have their required power and applicable configuration; both GPS paths are available. A supplied interruption is confined to the shared matched-VHF-antenna/coupler receiving path. Predict the affected functions. This is a stated exercise condition, not a diagnosis made from an aircraft symptom alone.

Before the recorded change

GIA 1 and GIA 2 power/configuration: established. GPS1 and GPS2 paths: available. Supplied interruption: shared VHF NAV/glideslope receiving path only. Result is hidden.

Course applicability and study references

The identified Cessna 208/208B Garmin G1000 installation described in supplied D2078 Revision 42: matched VHF blade pair, NAV coupler, GIA 63W/64W receiver functions, separate GPS antenna routes and selected display/audio functions. Match installed generation, software and equipment. Fictional availability records do not reproduce receiver performance or prescribe aircraft maintenance actions.

  • Shared VHF NAV and glideslope receiving path

Cessna D2078 Revision 42, 34-56-00 p. 1, April 1, 2019; supplied C208B MM PDF p. 2901. The matched VHF blades and coupler feed the NAV/glideslope receivers in both GIA 63W/64W units.

  • Independent GPS routes and receiving-unit requirements

34-57-00 pp. 1 and 101–102, April 1, 2019; supplied PDF pp. 2916–2919. Defines the combined GPS1/XM antenna’s separate connectors, separate GPS2 antenna, GIA receiver functions and power/configuration checks.

  • Separate display and audio selections
