Aircraft Battery Capacity Testing, Inspection & Service Limits

Explore the named components, make a prediction, then connect the supplied result to the system. This workshop adds coached practice alongside the course handbook and assessed lab.

Concorde RG battery capacity and repeat checks

Explore how stored charge becomes a qualified capacity result and a traceable next-check record. Predict the relationship, reveal the supplied evidence and explain its scope. This optional practice preserves the existing BAT-100 lab, independent review, final and completion requirements.

01 / Explore the relationships6 selectable components

Battery-test and evidence relationships. The power arrow represents the closed bench supply/return circuit; information arrows represent recorded observations, and workflow arrows connect method, interpretation and scheduling. This is not a physical wiring or servicing diagram.

Green outlines identify components named in the selected exercise record; they do not indicate a healthy component.

Component purpose

Concorde RG battery and terminal voltage

Stores chemical energy and supplies current to a complete external circuit.

How it works with the rest

A terminal-voltage reading identifies a potential difference under its stated conditions. A rested open-circuit voltage has no charging or discharge current; a reading while connected to a charger is a different observation. Starting is a short demand. Capacity is sustained delivered charge under a specified test, expressed in ampere-hours (Ah).

What the evidence must show

Keep charge state, a successful start, sustained capacity and installed supply/return performance separate. Equal terminal voltages do not establish equal capacity.

Exercise brief · supplied training conditions

Fictional records A and B are two separate Concorde RG training batteries, each rated 40 Ah and nominal 24 V. Both have the same measured rested open-circuit voltage. Their qualified capacity records have not yet been revealed. For the later records, inspection and equipment checks, full-charge preparation and 25°C battery temperature are confirmed; actual discharge is 40 A C1 to the selected 20.0 V endpoint. This exercise selects the Rev Q 85% capacity minimum with no differing aircraft/equipment requirement.

Before the recorded change

Battery A and Battery B: the same rested terminal voltage, 25.6 V. Capacity-test elapsed times are hidden. Equal charge-state observations have not supplied delivered-Ah evidence.

Predict the resultWith equal rested open-circuit voltages, which capacity relationship is possible for Concorde RG batteries A and B?
Course applicability and study references

Supplement to accepted BAT-100 Rev B. The numerical exercises explicitly select Concorde RG sealed lead-acid examples from 5-0171 Revision Q, December 4, 2018, ATA 24-30-71. They are fictional records, not instructions to discharge, charge or recover a real battery. Match actual chemistry, battery model, aircraft/equipment precedence, current instructions and any applicable fleet schedule before physical work. These RG limits and repeat recommendations are not transferred to nickel-cadmium or other batteries. No actual-aircraft endurance or maintenance release is established.

  • Concorde RG definitions and selected capacity method

Concorde Battery Corporation, 5-0171 Revision Q, December 4, 2018, ATA 24-30-71: Introduction p.1 defines C1, capacity and open-circuit voltage; Testing p.106 gives actual rate, endpoint precedence, elapsed-time capacity comparison and post-test recharge. The examples here explicitly select that method and criterion.

  • Application, utilization and conditioning history

Testing p.101 distinguishes main-turbine-start versus other uses and calendar versus aircraft-hour branches; its notes identify these as general recommendations subject to specific aircraft/fleet adjustments. Conditioning p.107 note 2 retains increased frequency after conditioning was required to pass. Initial and subsequent checks are distinct.

  • Accepted BAT-100 Rev B teaching and practice

Ten lessons and the six-component explorer connect supply/return, charging, voltage, charge state and sustained capacity. Existing three fixed bench records, independent review and native final remain required. The new records A–D are original formative exercises with their own visible conditions.

Original learning diagrams and supplied training records explain the stated relationships. Current aircraft-effective instructions and authorization govern actual maintenance.
